Rivalries are one of the things that add some spice to football.
In every country, there are games that make the streets empty and in North London, the battle between Red and White as been a particular highlight in the calendars of the fans from these teams. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs have challenged each other for European qualification season after season but every Gooner looks forward to St. Totteringham’s Day, that day when it’s confirmed that Spurs cannot finish above the Gunners in the league. You’d have to go back to 1995 to the last time the Spuds finished above the Gunners – I was still in primary school then. Damn!
This season, Tottenham’s campaign has been all about the new kid in the block – Harry Kane. The English forward rightly deserved the PFA Young Player of the Year award for his outstanding performance for the team that has seen him scored 30 goals in all competitions with 20 of them coming in the Premier League – 36% of Tottenham’s League goals this season.
The folks from the Lane began the campaign with a narrow win over West Ham before thrashing QPR resoundingly. They were brought back down to Earth with a home loss to Liverpool which began a wretched run that saw them lose six games in 12. They picked up some form in the midway point of the season with four wins in five which included that 5-3 victory over Chelsea. In January, Tottenham hosted the Gunners and the visitors got the lead through a Mesut Ozil strike but two goals from Kane handed Spurs the win on the day. Arsenal went on to win every other game in the Premier League bar the draw against Chelsea, while Spurs remained Spurs as they went on to lose five more games, taking their tally of league defeats this season to 11 – six at home and five away.
Sergio Aguero’s strike at the weekend ensured that Spurs finished below the Gunners as they currently have 58 points on the table with three games to go. Arsenal on the hand, have 70 points and quite frankly, they have bigger fish to fry, as they’re currently aiming for second spot, and of course another FA Cup trophy.
Spurs are just three points behind fifth placed Liverpool and they have Southampton breathing down their necks but with Manchester United’s newly-found shitty form, they may still have some Champions League aspirations. However, that’s frankly none of Arsenal’s business.

So for the 20th year running, the Gunners all over the world will celebrate St. Tottenrignham’s Day, as Tottenham will always be and forever remain…in the Gunners’ shadow.
