Kurzawa to Juventus: A New Twist in the Saga

Kurzawa with the ball

A couple of weeks ago, I shared my thoughts on Layvin Kurzawa and how he would be a good short and long term option for Arsenal, in the wake of the injury crisis hovering the club in the left back department. Kieran Tierney suffered a nasty injury in the win against West Ham and scheduled to be out till March 2020, while Sead Kolasinac goes in and out of the treatment table with consummate ease.

In their absence, Mikel Arteta utilized Bukayo Saka as the auxiliary left back and the youngster has been impressive in that unfamiliar position. Saka’s resolve got tested in Stamford Bridge, as he was back of that back line that was under siege for the best part of 70 minutes, but still managed to get a well deserved draw. Arteta has declared that Saka has a future as a left back,

“I think he could (have a future at left-back) because he’s willing to learn, he applies himself big time he is someone that’s has never played (that position) before but he’s really trying to do it as well as possible.

”You can see that he’s got many strengths to play in that position. Obviously he needs games, he needs experience and he needs to improve in some areas but that’s very good.”

The Guardian reported that Arsenal is interested in the services of Kurzawa and a loan move was in the cards. It was reported afterwards that rather than paying PSG what they demanded for player, the Arsenal hierarchy was prepared to wait till the summer, getting their man on a free transfer. Kurzawa himself was keen on a move out of PSG, and Arsenal seemed to be the likely destination this summer.

There’s a new twist to the Kurzawa saga as ESPN reported that he is now scheduled to move to Juventus in a swap deal that will involve Mattia de Sciglio moving to Paris. I don’t think that the deal will be as terrible as the Sanchez – Mkhitaryan swap, but if this is actually true, it clearly means that we will not get our man again.

If we want to be honest with ourselves, left back isn’t a position that demands critical attention, as the Gunners are desperately light in center back with Calum Chambers suffering a long term injury, Sokratis battling with illness, Rob Holding still struggling with fitness, David Luiz currently suspended and Skhodran Mustafi just being Mustafi.

I also think we need to invest in another defensive midfielder that will provide cover for Lucas Torreira as we have Guendouzi don’t have any better options in that role.

Kurzawa looked like a decent option to add to our ranks but with this updated information on him potentially moving to Juventus, I’m pretty sure that many Arsenal fans wouldn’t bat their eyelids, as he wasn’t high up there in their wish lists.
