RB Leipzig chairman Oliver Mintzlaff has claimed that the club received massive offers on their table from the Premier League for Arsenal target Benjamin Sesko in the summer.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was interested in bringing in a striker in the last transfer window but the club failed to sign a centre-forward of his choice.

Sesko was believed to be the first-choice option for the Gunners and the club were interested in taking him to the Emirates in the summer transfer window.

However, the striker surprised many when he decided to sign a new five-year contract with Leipzig and decided against leaving the club at the end of last season.

Arsenal didn’t try to sign one more striker for the rest of the summer and brought in Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea towards the end of the transfer window.

Leipzig chief admits that the club received big offers from the Premier League for the Arsenal target

Mintzlaff opened up about what happened behind the scenes when it came to convincing the striker to stay at Leipzig in the last summer transfer window.

The Leipzig chief admitted that offers to the tune of €70m were on the club’s table for Sesko in the transfer window but the German outfit refused to sell him.

He insisted that it was important that Leipzig held on to the forward in the summer despite the big offers as the team needed some consistency given the squad upheaval of recent years.

“Sesko had offers from the Premier League that were worth over €70m”, Mintzlaff told German magazine Kicker.

“It was important to us that we were able to put together a top team after the big upheaval last year and continue to work based on a certain continuity.”

Sesko has scored four times in seven appearances in all competitions this season and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal renew their interest in him next summer.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic at the end of the ongoing season.
