Commuters across the capital are being urged to prepare for widespread weekend disruption in March, as Transport for London confirmed extensive engineering works affecting multiple Underground, Overground and light rail services.
The programme of maintenance and upgrades will primarily impact weekend services, although some early morning and late evening journeys during weekdays will also be affected throughout the month.
Passengers are being encouraged to consult TfL’s journey planning tools before travelling, as several routes will either be suspended entirely or operate with significantly reduced frequency.
London Underground Sees Repeated Weekend Closures
Several Underground lines will experience recurring closures across different sections, with some routes facing complete suspensions over selected weekends in March.
The Bakerloo line will have no service between Queen’s Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Sunday, March 1, while the Piccadilly line will close entirely between Cockfosters and Uxbridge on selected weekends.
Significant disruption is also scheduled on the Circle, District, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines, with certain central sections repeatedly closed on consecutive weekends.
Notably, the Hammersmith & City line will see a full suspension across the entire route on the weekend of March 7 and 8, creating knock-on effects for connecting services.
The Metropolitan line will face closures between Baker Street and Aldgate on multiple weekends, with additional restrictions later in the month extending to Wembley Park.
Overground Services Facing Extended Interruptions
London Overground routes are also scheduled for substantial alterations, with numerous lines experiencing either full-day suspensions or partial evening shutdowns.
The Windrush line will see complex service changes affecting multiple branches, including closures between Highbury & Islington and several South London destinations on different dates.
Meanwhile, the Weaver line will encounter repeated late-night suspensions and weekend closures impacting services between Liverpool Street and destinations such as Enfield Town, Cheshunt and Chingford.
Other lines, including the Liberty, Lioness, Mildmay and Suffragette routes, will face intermittent shutdowns, often lasting the entirety of specific weekends.
Elizabeth Line, DLR And Trams Impacted
Beyond the Underground and Overground networks, the Elizabeth line will undergo numerous partial closures, particularly on Sundays, affecting routes between Paddington, Abbey Wood, Stratford and Shenfield.
Several of these suspensions will last until mid-morning, limiting early travel options for passengers heading into central London.
The DLR will also see repeated weekend closures on key stretches, including services between Bank, Tower Gateway, Canning Town and Lewisham on selected dates.
Tram services in Wimbledon, Croydon and Beckenham will experience both full-route suspensions and evening curtailments, with one extended closure running from late March into mid-April.
TfL has stressed that these works are part of long-term improvement plans, but travellers are advised to plan ahead carefully to minimise inconvenience during what promises to be a disruptive month across London’s transport network.
