Transfer News: Julián Álvarez Looks Set to Land in North London as Arsenal Close In

In the latest transfer news and speculation, Julian Álvarez has been identified as a major target for Arsenal.

Julian Álvarez’s future has been the subject of intense speculation since late January, when ESPN first reported that Arsenal were exploring the possibility of signing the Atlético Madrid striker. The Argentine World Cup winner has scored 45 goals and provided 15 assists in 98 appearances since joining Atlético in 2024, and interest in him across Europe has never been higher.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is widely seen as the key figure behind this potential deal, having spent 12 years working at Atlético before moving to north London last March. That relationship matters enormously here — it was Berta himself who negotiated Álvarez’s €95 million move from Manchester City to Atlético back in August 2024, and he reportedly retains a strong personal connection with the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo.

The pursuit has been anything but straightforward, though. Reports in Spain have indicated Arsenal made an initial offer of around €120 million, which Atlético knocked back. Now, with newer claims suggesting the fee could rise to as high as €150 million, it becomes one of the most expensive transfer battles in recent memory.

Barcelona were regarded as the player’s preference for much of the winter, but the Catalans’ ongoing financial constraints appear to be a serious complication. Atlético have reportedly made clear they have no intention of selling Álvarez to a direct La Liga rival — a development that has, rather neatly, opened the door wider for Arsenal.

Earlier reports from journalist Ruben Uria suggested Álvarez had little desire to return to the Premier League after his Manchester City spell. “Arsenal remains interested in the player, but as of February 16th, Julian Álvarez doesn’t want to go to the English team or return to the Premier League,” Uria stated. That position, however, appears to have shifted dramatically in recent weeks.

Spanish reports from late March now claim Arsenal have essentially been chosen as Álvarez’s destination. The player is said to view the London sporting environment as an ideal fit, with Arsenal’s ability to guarantee his registration — without the financial dependency issues plaguing Barcelona — reportedly a major factor in the decision.

There is also the small matter of Viktor Gyökeres, whom Arsenal signed last summer from Sporting CP with high hopes. The Swede has managed only 16 goals and two assists across 42 appearances in all competitions, a return that has disappointed given his Liga Portugal form. His struggles have reportedly accelerated Arsenal’s interest in a more proven operator at centre-forward.

Gabriel Jesus’ contract situation adds further urgency. With his deal expiring at the end of next season, the club are said to be open to selling the Brazilian this summer rather than lose him for nothing — a departure that would further justify the push for Álvarez.

If completed at the figures now being discussed, the move would shatter Arsenal’s current transfer record — the £105 million paid to West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023. The sheer scale of the potential investment speaks to how seriously Mikel Arteta’s side are taking their bid to close the gap with Europe’s elite.

What remains striking is how quickly the narrative has swung in Arsenal’s favour. Within the space of a few weeks, they have gone from being longshots to frontrunners, reportedly with the player’s agreement already in principle. Whether Atlético will ultimately accept the terms on the table is the final, and most critical, question.
