England vs Uruguay: Calvert-Lewin’s World Cup Dream Survives After Painful Wembley Miss

There are moments in international football that follow a player for years, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will know exactly which one he needs to put behind him quickly.

Back in an England shirt for the first time since 2021, the Leeds United striker had the chance to make an immediate statement in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley.

Cole Palmer’s cross found him unmarked, and the header was — by any reasonable standard — a clear goal. He skewed it wide.

Thomas Tuchel was diplomatic but unambiguous afterwards. “He had the big chance and he’s upset with himself,” the England manager said. “It’s normally a clear goal. He could have made a statement straight away.”

His final assessment — “did quite well” — was not damning, but it was hardly a ringing endorsement either.

The 29-year-old has had a strong domestic season, scoring 10 Premier League goals for Leeds and maintaining the kind of fitness that eluded him for years at Everton.

The World Cup had begun to feel achievable. The missed header brought the reality of squad selection back into sharp focus.

Michael Owen believes there is still a role for Calvert-Lewin as an impact substitute come the summer. “England need that kind of player to come off the bench,” Owen said, pointing to what Ollie Watkins did at Euro 2024.

The comparison has merit, but Watkins scored when it counted. Calvert-Lewin still needs to show Tuchel he can do the same on the international stage.

The Japan friendly at Wembley on Tuesday becomes a genuine crossroads. Tuchel named an expanded 35-man squad specifically to give fringe players time, and more minutes are expected.

Calvert-Lewin himself framed his priorities with admirable clarity. “It’s hard to look at the World Cup when what’s in front of me is keeping Leeds in the Premier League,” he said. “That was my main objective.”

The dream is still alive. But it is very much on probation.
