Southampton vs Arsenal: FA Cup Clash Review and Lineups After 2-1 Surprise

Southampton became the story of this FA Cup weekend, beating Premier League leaders Arsenal 2-1 at St Mary’s in a quarter-final result that felt almost impossible beforehand. A Championship club, sitting seventh in the second division, eliminated the team nine points clear at the top of English football.

Ross Stewart opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a rapid Saints counter-attack. Ben White misjudged a cross badly, and Stewart brought the ball down before drilling low past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Southampton wore a yellow and blue kit to mark the 50th anniversary of their 1976 FA Cup final win over Manchester United. The symbolism was not lost on anyone inside a roaring St Mary’s.

Arteta made three substitutions before the hour mark and one immediately paid off. Viktor Gyokeres, introduced from the bench, equalised in the 68th minute with a sharp close-range finish after Kai Havertz’s clever layoff.

With the tie seemingly drifting toward extra time, substitute Shea Charles struck in the 85th minute. He found the bottom corner from inside the box, and the stadium erupted.

Gabriel Magalhaes had already limped off with a knee concern moments after the equaliser, forcing an emergency reshuffle in Arsenal’s backline. The Brazilian had been one of ten players Arteta pulled from international duty last month, and his injury added genuine alarm to the defeat.

“Yeah, really disappointed in the manner that we lost the opportunity to get back to Wembley,” Arteta said afterward. He was honest about the defensive errors but refused to criticise his players directly.

Arsenal have now lost two consecutive cup finals and quarter-finals in a fortnight. After defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, this elimination represents a second trophy chance squandered inside two weeks.

Arteta pointed to the squad’s injury burden as context rather than excuse, admitting several players had taken to the field without being fully fit. Arsenal must now navigate a Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday in Lisbon.

The nine-point Premier League lead remains substantial, but City’s 4-0 dismantling of Liverpool earlier in the day was a reminder that momentum can shift quickly. Arsenal have gone from quadruple contenders to chasing two trophies, under pressure and injury-hit.

Southampton will face either Manchester City, Chelsea or whoever wins today’s West Ham versus Leeds tie at the Wembley semi-finals. Manager Tonda Eckert’s side are unbeaten in 15 games across all competitions, a statistic that now carries extraordinary weight.
