Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea’s captain and Argentine World Cup winner, has been linked with a stunning transfer to Manchester City this summer.
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, a potential switch to the Etihad Stadium has rapidly evolved into a concrete possibility for the 25-year-old midfielder.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is described as completely desperate to secure the signature of his former Chelsea player ahead of the transfer window.
Maresca reportedly views Fernandez as a unique tactical profile, the exact type of dynamic orchestrator that City currently lack in their star-studded engine room.
The pair share a very close and trusting relationship, which is understood to be a significant factor in City’s pursuit of the Argentine midfielder.
However, Manchester City will face fierce competition for Fernandez’s services, with European giants Real Madrid strongly linked with a move for him.
Paris Saint-Germain have also placed Fernandez on their transfer shortlist, positioning the midfielder at the centre of a heavyweight continental tug-of-war.
Fernandez is widely expected to depart Stamford Bridge this summer despite arriving for a record-breaking fee and subsequently inheriting the captain’s armband.
A gruelling campaign concluded with a final-day defeat away at Sunderland, a match many insiders believe was his farewell appearance in a Chelsea shirt.
Fernandez contributed 15 goals and seven assists across 53 appearances in all competitions this season, but his mind has reportedly been elsewhere for much of the campaign.
In January, following Chelsea’s Champions League exit to PSG, Fernandez openly admitted he would welcome the opportunity to live in the Spanish capital, flirting with a move to Real Madrid.
The midfielder cast further doubt over his Chelsea future by replying “I don’t know” when asked directly whether he would remain at the club next season.
Then manager Liam Rosenior responded by dropping Fernandez for two games, stating publicly that “a line was crossed” following those comments.
It was subsequently reported that Fernandez would take a more decisive stance on his future, with suggestions he could submit a formal transfer request to force an exit.
While no transfer request has yet been submitted, Real Madrid and Manchester City have emerged as the two strongest contenders to land the Argentine midfielder this summer.
