Chelsea Set To Confirm Valentin Barco As Fifth Summer Signing Under Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso has not yet begun work at Chelsea but already has a growing list of new signings lined up ahead of his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

A fifth addition now appears imminent, with all signs pointing to a move for Argentina prospect Valentin Barco being a matter of when, not if.

Chelsea had already announced four incoming signings, including Corinthians left-back Denner, Kazakh teenager Dastan Satpaev, Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda, and Strasbourg forward Emmanuel Emegha.

Barco, who plays for Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg under the BlueCo ownership umbrella, has publicly confirmed his exit from the French club.

The former Brighton and Boca Juniors left-back has also received the “Here We Go” treatment from transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, signalling the deal is close.

“Today I say goodbye to this club,” Barco wrote on social media. “I always gave everything on the pitch in every game for this shirt. I want to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me.”

Barco also addressed his coaches in the statement, writing: “Liam Rosenior and his staff for the confidence they showed in me and for helping shape me as a player; Gary O’Neil and his staff for understanding me and helping me improve; everyone at the club who supports us every day; and the fans for the love they always gave me. Thank you, Strasbourg.”

It was reported as far back as April that Chelsea had already agreed personal terms with Barco ahead of a summer move to west London.

The 21-year-old arrived at Strasbourg in January 2025, initially on loan from Brighton, and has since developed from a pure left-back into a midfield asset under Rosenior’s guidance.

Barco, now valued at around £30m by Transfermarkt, finished the season with nine assists and three goals in all competitions, proving his worth as a versatile attacking threat.

His ability to play at left-back, in midfield, and further forward on the left flank makes him a triple threat that Alonso could quickly come to rely upon.

Chelsea also face uncertainty over the futures of Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer, making Barco’s arrival a cost-effective creative insurance policy for the summer.

Marc Cucurella, who will soon enter the final two years of his contract and has flirted with leaving, could benefit from Barco providing competition and cover on the left side.

With BlueCo owning both clubs, few significant obstacles are expected to stand in the way of completing what looks to be a smart and timely piece of business.
