Liverpool Stand Firm On Wage Structure As Ibrahima Konate Prepares To Leave On Free Transfer

Liverpool are set to lose Ibrahima Konate this summer when his contract expires, ending a long and drawn-out renewal saga the club had hoped to resolve.

Talks between the two parties began as far back as November 2023, yet the French defender has failed to agree fresh terms throughout that entire period.

According to The Times, Konate is expected to depart on a free transfer, which is being viewed internally at the club as a disappointing outcome.

The situation is particularly frustrating given that Konate has been an important player for Liverpool since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021.

He has had strong spells alongside Virgil van Dijk, won major trophies, and at times looked like a defender who could be part of the club’s long-term future.

The breakdown in talks was not simply a matter of whether Liverpool could afford to pay higher wages, because by all accounts they can.

As reported by journalist Ben Jacobs, the core issue was about maintaining balance within the squad and protecting the existing wage structure.

Liverpool were prepared to reward Konate, but not at a level they felt would create problems or set a difficult precedent with other players at the club.

There was a significant gap between what the club were offering and what the player’s representatives wanted, and that gap was never bridged.

The timing of the departure adds further difficulty, as Liverpool have also recently lost Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, placing extra pressure on Arne Slot’s rebuild.

Losing three experienced players in a single summer removes a significant amount of quality and leadership from the dressing room, which is not easy to replace quickly.

Liverpool are clearly trying to remain financially disciplined, and the resources saved are expected to be redirected elsewhere, particularly in attack as the club look to replace Salah.

Yan Diomande has been mentioned as one of Liverpool’s wide-player targets as they look to strengthen several key areas of the squad.

There is also genuine faith within the club in the next generation of defenders, with Jérémy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni both seen as important players heading into next season.

However, Leoni’s injury recovery and Jacquet’s adaptation to English football mean Liverpool cannot simply assume a smooth transition at the back.

Liverpool are taking a calculated risk in allowing Konate to leave, rather than handing out a large contract purely to avoid losing him for nothing.
