Chelsea have decided against making an offer for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, despite earlier suggestions the club could enter the race for his signature.
According to reports, Chelsea looked at the situation but ultimately concluded they would not be submitting a formal proposal for the France international.
Konate’s representatives are instead holding talks with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, with both clubs now considered more realistic destinations for the 27-year-old centre-back.
The defender is set to depart Liverpool when his contract expires this summer, after both parties failed to agree on an extension.
Talks between Konate and Liverpool had been ongoing for an extended period before the club eventually decided not to push ahead with what was considered an expensive renewal.
Reports indicate that Konate is likely to leave Anfield after failing to reach a new agreement, bringing an end to a five-year spell at the club.
On paper, Konate represented an interesting opportunity for Chelsea, as a Premier League-proven defender available on a free transfer who is still only 27 years old.
However, so-called free transfers carry significant costs, with Konate expected to command major wages, a signing-on fee and agent fees that Chelsea have decided are not worth pursuing.
Chelsea already have a young defensive group in place, meaning the addition of another high-earning centre-back could create squad balance issues rather than solve them.
The decision may prove sensible given Chelsea’s need to manage their squad carefully, particularly following another difficult Premier League campaign.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich represent far more natural destinations for a defender of Konate’s profile and ambition at this stage of his career.
Both European clubs have a well-established history of moving quickly when elite players become available without a transfer fee attached to their name.
Bayern Munich have reportedly revisited their interest in the defender, although any potential move could depend on their own defensive departures this summer.
Real Madrid have also been strongly linked, with Konate now understood to be weighing his options seriously following his decision to leave Liverpool.
For Konate, a move to either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich would offer immediate access to Champions League football and the chance to compete for major trophies.
