Enzo Fernandez finds himself in a difficult and unusual position as the World Cup continues to showcase his considerable talents on the global stage.
The Argentine midfielder has made no secret of his desire to leave Chelsea, having expressed those feelings publicly earlier this year and refusing to commit his long-term future to the club.
Chelsea paid more than £100 million to sign Fernandez, and the club are firmly determined not to accept a single penny less than that figure in any potential sale.
That substantial asking price has severely limited the field of interested clubs, with very few willing or able to meet Chelsea’s demands for one of the world’s most expensive midfielders.
Real Madrid had previously been considered a potential destination, but the Spanish giants have since released a public statement confirming they have no interest in signing Fernandez.
With Real Madrid out of the picture, the list of realistic suitors for the 25-year-old has shrunk to almost nothing, leaving his future increasingly uncertain despite his clear desire to move on.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has offered a sharp insight into the situation, suggesting that Fernandez’s strong performances at the World Cup are doing little to attract potential buyers.
Instead, according to Jacobs, his displays are simply hardening Chelsea’s resolve to hold firm on their valuation and retain their star midfielder if the asking price is not met.
Jacobs outlined his thinking clearly when speaking on the London is Blue podcast, explaining exactly where the situation currently stands for the Argentine international.
“Enzo Fernandez, at the price he’s valued, doesn’t have that many options,” Jacobs said on the London is Blue podcast.
“He’s again putting himself at the forefront of a lot of clubs’ minds and in the shop window because of the World Cup he’s having, but this will only make Chelsea double down in wanting to keep him unless their valuation is met and he’s still very well contracted.”
The observation highlights a cruel irony for Fernandez, where performing at his absolute best is actively working against his chances of securing a transfer away from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea hold all the significant leverage in this situation, controlling both the contract length and the price tag that continues to put off any serious potential suitors in this window.
Unless a club steps forward willing to match Chelsea’s valuation in full, it appears increasingly likely that Fernandez will remain at the club heading into the new season despite his wishes.
