Sebastian Berhalter has joined Middlesbrough from Vancouver Whitecaps for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year contract with the EFL Championship club.
The 25-year-old American midfielder arrives having made 167 appearances for the Whitecaps, scoring 20 goals and registering 26 assists across all competitions since joining in February 2022.
Berhalter’s move to Teesside represents a notable transition from Major League Soccer to the second tier of English football, where he will be looking to make his mark.
Despite being a USA international, Berhalter was actually born in London while his father Gregg was playing for Crystal Palace, giving the midfielder a personal connection to English football.
Gregg Berhalter is currently the head coach of Chicago Fire, continuing the family’s long association with the game on both sides of the Atlantic.
With Sebastian’s Whitecaps contract due to expire at the end of the current season, Middlesbrough were able to secure the two-time MLS All-Star for just $2 million according to MLSSoccer.com, representing excellent value.
Prior to the World Cup break, Berhalter had enjoyed a productive campaign for Jesper Sørensen’s Whitecaps side, contributing seven goals and four assists in 18 appearances.
Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg will now be able to call upon Berhalter alongside USMNT teammate Aidan Morris, the pair having developed a strong understanding as longtime friends and international colleagues.
Morris is a two-time MLS Cup winner with the Columbus Crew, and his presence at the club is likely to help Berhalter settle quickly into life in the Championship.
Berhalter could make his debut as soon as Friday, 7 August, when Middlesbrough face Wrexham in a Carabao Cup first-round tie, handing Hellberg an immediate opportunity to assess his new signing.
The midfielder expressed genuine excitement about the move, making clear his ambitions for continued development at the club.
