New York City FC’s pursuit of Christian Pulisic has gained a prominent new supporter, with MLS commissioner Don Garber publicly backing the move and expressing his hope it gets completed.
Garber made his feelings known during an appearance on Fox News program “One Nation With Brian Kilmeade” on Sunday, weighing in on one of American soccer’s most talked-about potential transfers.
The commissioner drew a compelling comparison to one of MLS history’s greatest stories, suggesting Pulisic could follow in the footsteps of Landon Donovan by returning home to shine.
“I hope that they could sign a Christian Pulisic,” Garber said, making his position on the matter abundantly clear to a national television audience.
“I believe he would be great in our league, and I believe our league would be great for him,” Garber continued, making the case for both the player and the competition to benefit from such a move.
Garber also highlighted the personal dimension of a potential return, noting the opportunity to “be just up the road from your family in Penn[sylvania]” as an attractive element for the Hershey, Pennsylvania native.
NYCFC’s interest in Pulisic is not new, with the club having been publicly linked to the AC Milan star back in June of last year.
Club CEO Brad Sims confirmed their interest in an interview with The Post, and has since doubled down on his belief that Pulisic will eventually choose to play his football in MLS.
Speaking at an MLS media event in midtown Manhattan, Sims told reporters that the club are “believers that Christian is going to want to play in MLS, wants to be back home.”
“At whatever point in time that is, we would think and hope that New York City FC would be very high on his list of teams that he would want to play for,” Sims said.
AC Milan has stated they are not interested in selling Pulisic, a reality that Sims acknowledged during his June conversation with The Post, though questions remain about the player’s own intentions.
NYCFC’s pitch carries extra appeal given the club is preparing to move into a brand new stadium in Queens, which could make the prospect of joining even more attractive for a high-profile signing.
Pulisic faced criticism for his performances during the World Cup, giving the conversation around his future added context as he looks to reassert himself as one of America’s top footballers.
