The LA Galaxy have officially signed forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano on loan from San Diego FC as a Designated Player through December 2026.
The deal includes a permanent trade option, giving the Galaxy the ability to sign the Mexican international on a long-term basis if the loan proves successful.
Lozano, 31, brings a decorated club career to Los Angeles, having previously represented PSV Eindhoven, Napoli, C.F. Pachuca, and San Diego FC across multiple leagues.
Across his career at club and international level, the forward has tallied over 129 goals, cementing his status as one of the most productive attackers of his generation.
Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz confirmed the club had previously attempted to sign Lozano, describing the deal as a moment that had been years in the making.
“Hirving is a player whom we tried to acquire three years ago, so this feels like something of a full circle moment,” Kuntz said, adding that Lozano has “an excellent track record of performing on teams that have competed for titles in multiple leagues.”
Lozano is the fourth-highest earner in MLS in 2026, carrying guaranteed compensation of $9.3 million, with San Diego agreeing to cover a significant portion of his salary this season and next.
His departure from San Diego comes after a difficult spell in which he was frozen out of the first-team setup following reported tensions with head coach Mikey Varas.
A source told ESPN earlier this year that an intense moment between Lozano and Varas escalated into a shouting match last October, contributing to his exclusion from matchday squads for months.
San Diego sporting director Tyler Heaps acknowledged the situation in a statement, saying: “We have been working with Hirving and his side to find the right opportunity for him to get him back on the field.”
Heaps had previously stated that Lozano was not in the “sporting plans” for the club heading into the 2026 campaign, with the player’s last appearance for San Diego coming in November 2025.
Despite the turbulent exit, Lozano’s overall record at San Diego remained impressive, with the winger recording 20 goal contributions across 33 appearances during the club’s inaugural 2025 MLS season.
Before arriving in MLS, Lozano returned to PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and helped the Dutch club win back-to-back Eredivisie titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25, contributing 11 goals and five assists along the way.
On the international stage, Lozano has earned more than 70 caps for Mexico, scoring 18 goals and registering 12 assists since making his senior debut in a 2-0 win over Senegal in 2016.
His most iconic international moment came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when his goal against Germany helped Mexico secure a historic victory over the defending world champions.
Lozano won the Concacaf Player of the Year award in 2018 and represented Mexico at two World Cups, multiple Gold Cups, and the Copa América and FIFA Confederations Cup across his career.
He was notably absent from Mexico’s roster for this summer’s World Cup in North America, where the co-hosts advanced to the round of 16, having lacked regular game time heading into the tournament.
With the Galaxy still pushing for a playoff spot, Lozano’s arrival signals a clear intent from the club to strengthen their attacking options for the remainder of the season.
