Sergi Roberto is targeting a move to LA Galaxy as the former Barcelona captain looks to continue his career in Major League Soccer.
The versatile midfielder spent time with Como in Serie A after departing Barcelona, having signed a two-year deal with the newly-promoted Italian club.
Roberto joined Como following the expiry of his Barcelona contract, with manager Cesc Fabregas persuading him to be part of an ambitious project in northern Italy.
Speaking upon joining Como, Roberto said: “I see this as a new challenge in my career, I really believe in the project.”
He noted that when Fabregas first contacted him, the former midfielder explained the club’s ambitions of rising from lower divisions all the way to Serie A in five years.
Roberto added: “It’s exciting for me to come and be part of the growth of the club. I think I can help achieve the goals of the club with hard work and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Before his move to Como, Roberto had spent his entire senior career at Barcelona, making 373 appearances after joining the famous La Masia academy at the age of 14.
He made his first-team debut in November 2010 and went on to win two UEFA Champions Leagues, seven La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies, and two Club World Cups.
Roberto became Barcelona’s first captain following the departure of Sergio Busquets, though his final season at the club proved trophyless and a contract renewal ultimately fell through.
His chances of remaining at Barcelona took a significant hit when Hansi Flick replaced Xavi Hernandez as manager, with the club’s Financial Fair Play situation making renewal an unlikely prospect.
Before departing, Barcelona organised a farewell event for Roberto, attended by former teammates including Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, and Gerard Pique, with the player visibly emotional throughout.
Now, with his Como chapter drawing to a close, a move to LA Galaxy represents the next step for the experienced and decorated midfielder.
