The New England Revolution have confirmed the acquisition of Queens Park Rangers center back Tylon Smith on loan from the EFL Championship side.
The 21-year-old South African defender joins the Revolution for the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with the club holding a purchase option at the end of the loan.
Revolution general manager and chief soccer officer Chris Tierney expressed confidence that the move represents a strong step forward for the young defender’s career.
“Tylon Smith is a promising player who will help strengthen our defense,” Tierney said, highlighting Smith’s club and international pedigree.
Tierney added: “At just 21 years old, Tylon has built a strong foundation through both his club and youth national team experience.”
“We’re confident that this is the ideal environment for Tylon to continue his development and we look forward to welcoming him to New England,” the sporting director continued.
Smith came through the ranks at South African Premiership side Stellenbosch FC, where he featured predominantly for the reserves before earning a senior contract in October 2024.
His form at Stellenbosch attracted attention from Europe, and he made the move to QPR in July 2025, initially featuring for the club’s under-21 side.
Smith managed four first-team appearances across all competitions for QPR, starting one match in the EFL Cup against Plymouth and coming off the bench three times in the Championship.
Across those four outings, he accumulated a total of 79 minutes of first-team football, demonstrating his potential without yet being given an extended run in the starting lineup.
The move to New England represents a significant opportunity for Smith to develop with consistent playing time at the top level of American professional football.
His international credentials are already established, having been named to South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underlining his standing as one of the country’s most promising young defenders.
The Revolution will be hoping his blend of youth, international experience, and defensive quality can help shore up their backline during the upcoming MLS Sprint Season campaign.
