Tottenham Hotspur’s long pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho has come to a definitive close after the Brazilian signed a new contract keeping him at the Etihad until 2031.
City’s deal with the 21-year-old includes an option to extend by a further 12 months, ending all speculation about his future once and for all.
Spurs had made Savinho their primary transfer target this summer, with head coach Thomas Frank keen to bring the Brazil international to north London.
Tottenham indicated to Manchester City they were willing to pay £60.7 million for Savinho, who was himself reportedly keen on making the switch.
However, City turned down two bids for the winger and decided talks had dragged on to a point where finding a suitable replacement was no longer possible.
Spurs were ultimately put off by Manchester City’s £70 million valuation, a figure that proved too steep for the north London club to meet.
The failed Savinho pursuit came alongside Tottenham’s disappointment over Eberechi Eze, who opted to join Arsenal rather than move to Spurs this summer.
Those two transfer setbacks left Tottenham scrambling to address a creative void that had opened up significantly over the course of the window.
The club sold captain Son Heung-min to LAFC during the summer, while James Maddison suffered a season-derailing injury, removing their two leading assist providers from the equation.
Tottenham also made an improved £43 million offer for Como and Argentina midfielder Nico Paz, aged 20, in a bid to engineer a double signing during the window.
Como held out for a fee closer to £60 million for Paz, meaning that deal also failed to materialise for Thomas Frank’s side.
With deadline day approaching, Tottenham expanded their search for an attacking addition, describing the position as a clear priority heading into the final stages of the window.
The club’s hierarchy will need to act decisively to find alternatives capable of filling the gap left by Son’s departure and Maddison’s extended absence through injury.
