FC Dallas secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night, thanks to a late penalty converted by striker Petar Musa in second-half stoppage time.
Musa’s spot kick, taken seven minutes into added time, moved him level with Miami’s Lionel Messi in the race for the MLS Golden Boot Award with 18 goals for the season.
The Croatian forward has now scored 18 goals in back-to-back seasons, placing him in elite company in the club’s record books.
Musa is tied for the most single-season goals in FC Dallas history alongside Jason Kreis, Kenny Cooper, and Jesús Ferreira, a remarkable achievement for the in-form striker.
The penalty itself came after a lengthy video review upgraded an initial free kick when SKC defender Moises Mosquera fouled Musa right on the edge of the box one minute into stoppage time.
FC Dallas had trailed 2-0 inside the opening half-hour before staging a stunning three-goal comeback to lead 3-2 at the break.
Logan Farrington pulled one back in the 27th minute, before Musa headed home an excellent cross from Bernard Kamungo three minutes later to level the match.
Kaick then produced a booming one-touch finish from outside the penalty arc in the 45th minute to give Dallas the lead heading into the interval, netting his second goal of the season.
Sporting Kansas City had started brightly, with Taylor Calheira opening the scoring in the 4th minute after burying a rebound from a Jonathan Sirois save, before Stephen Afrifa doubled the lead in the 20th minute by capitalising on a slow clearance from FC Dallas midfielder Ramiro.
The result moved FC Dallas to 10-6-7 and 37 points, strengthening their hold on a Western Conference playoff berth despite being outscored 14-11 in their last four matches while posting a 2-1-1 record across that run.
Saturday also marked FC Dallas’ first home match at Toyota Stadium since May 13, following a period of renovations at the ground.
For Sporting Kansas City, the defeat extended their winless run to seven matches, leaving them rooted to last place in the overall MLS standings with a record of 4-16-3.
