Palmer’s latest withdrawal from England duty has again frustrated manager Thomas Tuchel, who wants to see the Chelsea playmaker in camp consistently.
The 23-year-old had started the season in impressive form, scoring four goals in seven appearances for Chelsea before a recurring muscular issue derailed his momentum.
That injury forced Palmer to withdraw from England’s Nations League squad, adding to a growing list of missed international camps that is beginning to concern his national team manager.
Tuchel made his feelings known publicly, expressing visible frustration at the situation and warning that Palmer’s persistent absences are costing him dearly in the battle for a regular starting place.
“For sure it’s a missed opportunity [for Palmer]. It’s another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities, and I don’t blame him for it,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel was direct about what is required from the Chelsea forward, emphasising that trust can only be built through direct observation on the training pitch.
“I only want to rely on what I personally witness and what I see within my team, and for that you have to be in camp,” the England boss added.
Tuchel also outlined his understanding of the nature of Palmer’s current physical condition, suggesting it was significant enough to prevent him competing at the highest level.
“My understanding is that he plays with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete on the highest level with discomfort and pain, so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us,” Tuchel confirmed.
Despite the setback on the international stage, Chelsea remain confident that Palmer will return to full fitness and play a central role in their domestic campaign this season.
Transfer speculation has also surrounded the 24-year-old recently, with Manchester United reportedly linked and suggestions that Palmer could be unsettled in London and keen on a return to the north.
However, journalist Dean Jones, writing for FlashScore, moved to dampen those rumours after speaking with sources close to the player.
“Sources have assured, however, that Palmer remains completely committed to England and is determined to establish himself as a key figure in the team ahead of EURO 2028,” Jones reported.
Jones also addressed the speculation surrounding Palmer’s club future, making clear that outside noise has not disrupted the player’s mindset or ambitions at Chelsea.
“He is also understood to be fully focused on Chelsea, despite recent speculation over his future,” Jones added, quoting sources familiar with the player’s thinking.
Jones went further, explaining that Palmer retains a strong personal drive to prove himself across both club and country this season, regardless of the setbacks he has encountered.
“There is a determination from the player to prove himself in every sense this season, both for Chelsea and England. He has always retained complete confidence in his own ability and is focused on staying fit enough to demonstrate his quality consistently,” Jones wrote.
