Chelsea’s pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone has ended in disappointment, with the French international remaining in the Italian capital despite reported interest from the London club.
Roma sporting director D’Amico moved swiftly to dismiss the speculation, delivering a blunt assessment of the situation that undermined claims of a serious transfer approach.
D’Amico stated plainly: “Manu Kone was never close to joining Chelsea. There was not even an official bid. Gasperini didn’t have to put any veto because nothing happened.”
The statement directly contradicts reports suggesting Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Kone and were pushing hard to complete a deal before the transfer window closed.
Roma had reportedly been seeking a fee in the region of €60 million to sanction any sale of the highly-rated 25-year-old midfielder.
Kone, who has earned 19 caps for France, had been identified as a key transfer target following indications that Enzo Fernandez could be edging closer to a move to Manchester City.
The versatile midfielder is capable of operating as both a No. 6 and a No. 8, though it is at the base of midfield where he tends to produce his most effective performances.
Kone made 37 appearances across all competitions for Roma last season, contributing two goals and establishing himself as one of the more consistent performers in the squad.
His time in Italy followed spells in Germany and France, with that adaptability across different leagues and environments considered a significant asset as clubs monitor his development.
Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini has been credited in some reports with blocking Kone’s departure, though D’Amico’s comments suggest the situation never escalated to a point requiring any such intervention.
Chelsea also turned their attention to an alternative midfield option during the window, but a reported £47 million deal for Senegalese midfielder Camara collapsed dramatically in the final hours before the deadline.
The double failure leaves Chelsea’s midfield reinforcement plans unfulfilled for now, with the club expected to monitor Kone’s situation ahead of a potential renewed approach in the January window.
