Chelsea Face £75m Dilemma As Levi Colwill Attracts Liverpool And Barcelona Interest

A price tag of between £65 million and £75 million is hovering over one of Chelsea’s most promising defensive talents, shaping what could become a defining transfer saga.

Intermediaries have touted those figures as a threshold that could force the west London club’s hand on the future of Levi Colwill, their 23-year-old academy graduate.

The complicating factor for Chelsea is that, as a homegrown player who cost them nothing to develop, any sale would represent close to pure profit on their books.

Despite that financial temptation, sources are clear that Chelsea’s primary intention heading into the new year is to keep Colwill and hand him a new deal.

Contract talks are understood to be one of the club’s top priorities for 2027, even though Colwill’s existing agreement does not expire until 2029, leaving no immediate pressure to act.

Inside Stamford Bridge, there is genuine belief that the defender, despite some injury disruption along the way, has the makings of a long-term leader and figurehead for the club’s project.

However, the external noise is growing louder, with both Liverpool and Barcelona identified as serious admirers tracking Colwill’s development closely this season.

Barcelona’s interest appears particularly advanced, with one source stating: “Barcelona view Colwill as a top target after studying his performances and stats in great detail. There have been internal discussions about putting a bid together, possibly as early as this January.”

Not everyone in the industry expects a formal approach imminently, with other sources tempering expectations around any near-term bids materialising for the England international.

Chelsea plan to open discussions with Colwill’s camp in the new year, at which point the true strength of interest from Barcelona and Liverpool is likely to become clearer.

One source underlined the club’s official position while acknowledging the financial reality: “To be clear, Chelsea want to keep Colwill. That’s their plan. But if someone came in with £65-75m they’d have to think about it. Let’s see how his contract talks go, but that kind of money would be hard to turn down.”

Should Colwill ultimately depart, Chelsea have already been scouting potential replacements, with Como’s Jacobo Ramon and AC Milan’s Koni De Winter both attracting the club’s attention.

Chelsea had previously considered Jeremy Jacquet as an option, though that avenue closed when the player completed a move to Liverpool.

The coming weeks will be telling, as Chelsea attempt to wrap up a new deal before rival clubs have any further opportunity to test the defender’s ambitions.
