Manchester United are reportedly drawing up a formal offer for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero as transfer speculation around the Argentine intensifies this summer.
Reports emerging from Argentina suggest United are “preparing an offer” for the centre-back, looking to steal a march on several high-profile European rivals.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have both been credited with an interest in Romero, making this a genuinely competitive race for one of the Premier League’s most recognisable defenders.
New permanent United head coach Michael Carrick is keen to reshape his squad significantly ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League in the 2026/27 season.
Romero is valued at around £70 million and has been one of Tottenham’s most influential players despite a turbulent campaign for the north London club.
Spurs are not standing still in the transfer market, having already had two bids rejected by Brighton for Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, with a third offer reportedly being prepared.
Dutch media outlet VI News claims Van Hecke has already made up his mind about joining Spurs this summer, with personal terms described as “a piece of cake” to resolve.
Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle United are all said to be competing for Van Hecke’s signature, but a reunion with Roberto De Zerbi appears to be the player’s preferred destination.
Should Romero move to Old Trafford, he will be eager to erase painful memories from his last visit, having been sent off in the 29th minute of a match that United won 2-0 through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.
Then Spurs manager Thomas Frank spoke publicly about the red card after the match, revealing that Romero had apologised to his teammates in the changing room following the dismissal.
Frank was quick to defend his captain’s character, stating: “He was sorry for the incident. He apologised to his team-mates in the changing room.”
The Spurs boss also underlined Romero’s importance to the squad, saying: “I think he’s one of the most important players. When he performs at his top, he’s driving the team.”
Romero was briefly in doubt for Tottenham’s final-day relegation decider after recuperating from injury in Argentina, but he reversed his decision and featured in the crucial fixture.
Spurs secured their top-flight survival with a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day of the Premier League season, adding significant context to any potential summer departure for their captain.
