Rangers have confirmed the signing of defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union on a four-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.
The 22-year-old centre-back becomes the Ibrox club’s eighth summer signing, with the fee reported to be in the region of £3 million.
Philadelphia Union will retain a significant sell-on clause as part of the agreement, ensuring they benefit from any future transfer of the young defender.
Makhanya had an impressive 2025 campaign in Major League Soccer, playing a key role in helping Philadelphia claim the Supporters’ Shield after finishing with the best regular-season record.
However, the 2026 season proved far more difficult for both the player and the club, with Philadelphia entering the league’s World Cup break at the bottom of the standings.
Head coach Bradley Carnell departed the club amid the struggles, though Philadelphia have shown signs of improvement since returning to action with consecutive victories.
Makhanya made 13 appearances during the campaign, keeping two clean sheets while winning 67% of his aerial battles, a figure that will have attracted attention from clubs across Europe.
The South Africa international made his international debut in May and was included in his country’s World Cup squad, underlining the rapid rise of the young defender on the global stage.
Speaking after completing his move to Ibrox, Makhanya expressed his delight at joining one of Scotland’s most storied clubs.
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history,” he said.
“I can’t wait to get started,” he added. “For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
New manager Derek McInnes has been tasked with returning Rangers to the top of Scottish football, with title-holders Celtic the side to beat this coming season.
McInnes came agonisingly close to winning the championship during his time with Hearts, and Makhanya is viewed as a player who can significantly strengthen the defensive unit.
David Edgar, who runs the Heart and Hand Podcast, confirmed the fee on social media, writing: “Makhanya signs, fee of £3m. Welcome to Ibrox!”
With the defensive addition now wrapped up, the Daily Record reports that McInnes is turning his attention to signing two wingers, one on each flank, to further bolster his squad ahead of a title challenge.
