BBC reporter backs Mikel Arteta to win the Premier League

Mikel Arteta signed a new three-year contract today to continue as Arsenal boss. The Spaniard is now backed to win the ‘big titles’ for Arsenal in the future.

The 42-year old won his first trophy during his first season in charge of the club. Arteta had only been an assistant coach before making the jump to Arsenal boss. He served as an assistant coach at Manchester City, learning from Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal have won the FA Cup and two Community Shields under Mikel Arteta, and the Gunners are tipped to win more trophies in the future.

Mikel Arteta tipped to win big

Arsenal have not lifted the Premier League trophy in over 20 years. BBC sport football news reporter Nizaar Kinsella believes Mikel Arteta will be the one to break the drought for the Gunners:

“Arsenal have successfully become a force again under manager Mikel Arteta, and a new three-year deal represents a firm backing that he is the man to end the club’s wait of more than 20 years for a Premier League title.” Kinsella wrote on the BBC Sport website.

It felt like there was little chance he would leave when his contract expired next summer, given the relationships he has built internally and the reassuring calm with which he spoke when discussing the deal.

But previous links to Paris St-Germain and Barcelona perhaps showed the need to tie down Arteta.”

Kinsella also praised the Arsenal hierarchy for working with the coach to produce great results on the pitch.

“The whole machinery at Arsenal behind the scenes is behind both Arteta and sporting director Edu, who have found a way to be competitive against the Manchester City juggernaut – running them close to the title last season.

They also went close in the 2022-23 campaign, but it is now time to take the final step.

After signing Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori the Gunners have again strengthened, though question marks have remained over whether they should have signed a striker.

This is a manager, squad and backroom staff seemingly now capable of winning the biggest titles in England, and it is perhaps symbolic that a new deal comes before a north London derby against Tottenham.”

Gunners’ boss insists the players made him stay

After signing a new contract at the club, Mikel Arteta has revealed that his relationship with the players and the officials at the club is the reason he decided to commit to a long-term deal:

“Then it’s down to the players. I see a smile on their faces every day when they come in, and a will to get better. My only objective is to get the best out of them, improve their lives and make sure that we educate them as human beings in the best possible way, and make sure that they fulfil their talent and potential. If that is the case, we’re going to be very successful as a team.

“And then Edu as well – he was the first one to knock on my door before I joined and he made a big call to put all the trust he had in me to drive this massive boat in the direction and the way we both had a vision to do it, and it’s been pivotal. Our relationship has been incredibly strong, very honest, very transparent and I’m very grateful for that.”
