Arsenal legend Robert Pires has made baffling comments about Bukayo Saka. The Frenchman claims the Gunners’ star is not better than Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku.
Pires played for the Gunners from 2000-2006 and is widely believed to be one of the best foreign players to play in England. The former Arsenal man was voted FWA Footballer of the Year, one season after joining the club.
What Robert Pires said about Bukayo Saka
Pires cited Saka’s performances in big games as a concern. Claiming that the Arsenal star is not consistent enough during big games:
“Bukayo Saka still lacks a certain level of consistency and experience, especially in the big games. Perhaps this season, especially in the Champions League, he will show a more convincing face than last season when it counts.” Pires said speaking to Wettbasis.com.
“In my opinion, Jeremy Doku from Manchester City is a bit better because he is technically stronger, has better dribbling skills and is more imaginative.”
Doku only managed three Premier League goals last season, while Bukayo Saka finished in the top 10 goalscorers, scoring 16 goals last season.
Pires backs Raheem Sterling to be a great signing
The Frenchman also added that he loved the addition of Raheem Sterling to the squad. The 29-year old joined the Gunners on loan from Chelsea on deadline day.
“I can well imagine that Raheem will be very motivated to start his new adventure. He hasn’t had a happy time at Chelsea recently and it’s clear that he will show everyone. He can only surprise in a positive way.”
“Arsenal’s schedule is so packed that Arteta will use every player at any time. The fact that Martinelli or Trossard have even more competition can also inspire then and prevent them from slowing down. Competition is always good, no matter what position.”
Pires is not the only supporter of the signing; William Gallas also backed the ex-Chelsea man to shine. Sterling would provide experience while being an able back up to the Arsenal front line. Gunners fans will be hoping that Sterling reuniting with Mikel Arteta will produce results on the pitch.
Pires is wrong about Arsenal star
Bukayo Saka has been the crown jewel for Arsenal ever since he broke into the first team. He’s been one of the most consistent players under Mikel Arteta and has stepped up to carry the team multiple times. Just last season, Saka had 16 goals and 9 assists in the Premier League. That kind of production only comes from some of the best players in the world – and Bukayo Saka is certainly one of them.
