Former Premier League star Rafael van der Vaart has ruled out Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League this season and admitted that he has long-term worries about the Gunners team.
Arsenal finished second to Manchester City in the last two seasons and are one of the strongest contenders to break their Premier League dominance this term.
The Gunners have started the season well and are sitting on seven points after three games ahead of facing north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
There are worries about the overall strength of the Arsenal squad especially in the absence of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard for the big derby this weekend.
However, Arsenal are still being touted as the team who could end Manchester City’s run of four successive Premier League titles this season.
But Van der Vaart has a different point of view compared to others.
The former midfielder has worries about Arsenal in the long-term
The Dutchman, who represented Tottenham during his playing career, insisted that Liverpool and not Arsenal who seem to be the closest team to Manchester City this season.
Arsenal failed twice in the last two years in the race with Manchester City and Van der Vaart insisted that mentally it is hard to keep that level of intensity going season after season.
He doesn’t see the Gunners winning the Premier League this season and feels there are long-term worries in the team as well.
“Many think Arsenal will be the ones to serve it up to Manchester City, but I don’t agree”, the former midfielder told BetMGM (via the Evening Standard).
“City and Liverpool look the two best sides to me.
“It’s so hard to keep going again and again, season after season, and I look at the Arsenal team in the long-term and worry about them. I can’t see Arsenal winning the Premier League this season.”
