Atalanta midfielder Ederson has insisted that his side’s performance against Arsenal showed that they can compete against the biggest teams in Europe.
The home side had the chance to win the game at the Gewiss Stadium on Thursday night but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced the heroics to keep the score at 0-0.
The Spaniard saved a penalty from Mateo Retegui and saved again when the Italian tried to take advantage of the rebound to walk away from Bergamo with a clean sheet.
There was regret at the end of the evening inside the Gewiss Stadium as Atalanta had a real chance of picking up three points but Ederson insisted that these things can happen at the Champions League level.
We showed we can compete with Arsenal – Ederson
The midfielder stressed the importance of the performance Atalanta produced despite missing out on winning the game on Thursday night.
He insisted that it is massively pleasing that against a team of Arsenal’s stature, Atalanta stood up and showed that they can compete with the best teams in Europe.
Ederson is keen to see Atalanta remain calm and continue to produce the level of performance they showed against Arsenal on a big Champions League night.
“We wanted the three points but Arsenal are strong”, the Brazilian told Sky Italia (via Tutto Mercato).
“We are happy because we have shown that we are strong and can play against big teams.
“We also had chances to score but in the Champions League, it always happens like this. We are calm, we played a good game and we will continue like this.”
