Como coach Cesc Fabregas reveals that he was in attendance on Thursday night for the Arsenal vs Atalanta Champions League clash. The Spanish coach explained that he was at the game to study the Europa League winners.
Como face Atalanta in the Serie A on Monday night. Fabregas was formally appointed as head coach of the Italian club this July, after he served as assistant coach as the team were promoted from Serie B.
The 37-year old retired from football in 2023. Fabregas began his career at Barcelona before moving to arsenal in 2003. He spent more than seven years at the club, and was hugely successful. The Spanish midfielder was one of the Gunners’ youngest ever players, and captain. Fabregas won the FA Cup and Community Shield during his time with the Gunners.
Cesc Fabregas reveals he studied Arsenal game plan
In the press conference ahead of Como’s game against Atalanta, Fabregas revealed he was in attendance for Thursday’s game to scout the Europa League holders:
“I do not cheer anyone on now, all of my life is dedicated to Como. It was a very interesting match. Gian Piero Gasperini is such a great coach and you can see how well he prepares his games,”
“He has been with Atalanta for nine years and is creating a masterpiece with that club. You can see the players follow him and the results confirm that good work.”
Arsenal were under pressure for most of the second half, with Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini calling out Arteta for ‘playing for a draw’.
Como need to improve
Fabregas also spoke on how his team need to improve if they are to win anything this season:
“I always tell my lads that in order to win, we must always do more than our opponents. Run more, suffer more and score one more goal,” continued Fabregas.
“On Monday we must go out there with no fear, but also without changing our playing style or philosophy of football.
“We know the quality of our opponents, which is why we need to pour everything we’ve got onto that pitch. If you try to play on the same level with Atalanta, you will certainly lose, so we have to do more.”
Como are winless in all competitions this season, losing three games and drawing two. Cesc Fabregas’ side are coming off the back of a 2-2 draw to Bologna. Hopefully he picks up Arsenal’s winning mentality; something Jorginho said Mikel Arteta has built into the dressing room.
