Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes Mikel Arteta is a great coach and does not need a trophy to show for it. But added that this Arsenal side have to win a major trophy to be remembered.
The Spaniard took over his first senior coaching job with the Gunners back in 2019, after being an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Arteta’s genius was evident in his first season as Arsenal lifted the FA Cup. The Gunners have gone on to win two Community Shields since then.
Louis Saha’s words are something Mikel Arteta has publicly touched on this season, saying the Gunners are ready to win trophies:
“Well, in terms of trophies and success, it’s only if you win it. How you measure success, or how you associate that word, probably we could have a much more deeper conversation. But we are here to win. We are here to win the big competitions and the ones that are not considered that big. That’s our duty.”
Mikel Arteta does not need to prove himself by winning a trophy – Saha
Louis Saha, who won the Premier League and Champions League with Manchester United, believes that Mikel Arteta is a brilliant coach and does not need a trophy. But a major honor would elevate his status and push him to greatness:
“I don’t think that Mikel Arteta needs to win a trophy to demonstrate that he is a top, top manager. He’s shown that he’s one of the best by challenging Manchester City for the title in back-to-back seasons. I think to do what he did, that’s an unbelievable achievement.”
“I’m really impressed with his ability as a coach, and winning a trophy wouldn’t change that – everyone can see how good Mikel Arteta is. For a club like Arsenal, and for Mikel himself, he will want to win something.”
“He’s got so close with his group of players, the next step is lifting that Premier League title or winning the Champions League. The best managers are addicted to winning trophies. There’s no doubt that we’re watching a great Arsenal team this season.”
This Arsenal team should have a trophy to show their greatness
Saha also added that despite turning Arsenal into a team that is competing for every trophy, if Mikel Arteta does not get the current group to win something, they may be forgotten.
“But for this team to be recognised as one of the best in Premier League history, they need to add some trophies to the cabinet. That is the only thing that is missing at the moment.”
