Bukayo Saka makes promise to Arsenal legend after statement win in Champions League

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has told Thierry Henry that he believes this is the season the Gunners can become Champions.

Arsenal beat last season’s Champions League semifinalists 2-0 at the Emirates. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo were enough to put away the French champions who had no answer to the defensive display from the gunners.

Mikel Arteta kept their second clean sheet in a row in the Champions League this season as they remain unbeaten in all competitions.

Arteta was delighted with a win over ‘one of the best teams in the world’:

“We played one of the best teams in the world, they are super dominant in the league, they have so much quality, understanding and tactical options, and we dealt with it really well, with a lot of personality.

“We were very determined, we wanted to be owning that pitch, playing the way we wanted to and in the first half, I think we were very impressive with the performance and the two goals that we scored.”

Bukayo Saka shows Thierry Henry that Arsenal are ready

After scoring in the 2-0 win, Bukayo Saka told Arsenal legend Thierry Henry that this could be the Gunners’ year.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on us but I do think this is the year.

“I think we’ve been close the last two years, and we’re getting close, but yeah this will hopefully be the year.”

Mikel Arteta’s side sit in third place in the league, just one point off leaders Liverpool. Bukayo Saka replied to Thierry Henry, who noticed the work rate of the Arsenal attack during the game:

“It’s good that you noticed that. The attackers are doing a lot of work as well for the clean sheets,’ the England international responded.

“But yeah, of course, we have to do our job to help out the defenders.

“It’s not easy as an attacking player. I want to be up the pitch and save my legs for the transition.

“But when I look at the results and the results we’ve had this season, we’ve had a lot of clean sheets so it shows that it is working.

“In most games we believe we can score in open play of set-pieces so as long as we score in most games, we can win.”

Arsenal host Southampton this weekend. They sit in the relegation zone, having failed to win a game this season. The match will also be a homecoming for Aaron Ramsdale, who left the Emirates this summer.
