Arsenal have been on an upward trajectory since Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli became first team players at the club.
The wing pairing have been one of the best in recent years. But as Saka continues to improve and become one of the best players in Europe, there have been question marks over Martinelli.
The Brazilian has experienced a steep decline; from scoring 16 goals in 2022/23 to just six league goals last season. Martinelli went on a long drought and only scored for the first time since March in the game against Southampton.
The 23-year old said the goal brought a lot of confidence to him:
“I’m really happy, really confident now and just trying to play my football again,” he said post-match. “[Arteta said] go there, control the game and try to take the game to the final third and create chances for us.”
Martinelli’s inconsistent form in the team, coupled with the growing importance of Leandro Trossard has led to questions about his starting spot.

The gunners have been linked to a move for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane. Football Insider reports that Arsenal are working on a deal to sign the German.
He would join next summer, when his contract with the Bavarian club expires. Bayern fans have not been happy with Sane who is now a rotation option at the club after arriving as a first team player when he signed for Manchester City.
The 28-year old’s output has also not been great; he has averaged eight league goals over the past two seasons. Sane has been out of favor under Thomas Tuchel and now Vincent Kompany.
Should Mikel Arteta take the risk on a 28-year old?
Since joining Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has trusted former players to join him and make an impact in North London. Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and recently Raheem Sterling have all been signed since he took over Arsenal.
Arteta was said to have personally coached Sterling and Sané at Manchester City when the wing pairing had some of the best goal scoring seasons of their career.
Leroy Sane is a great player with Premier League and Champions League experience and would join as a free agent. The German can play on the left and the right, making him a very solid addition to boost the attack.
