Gary Neville renewed his criticism of Liverpool’s squad depth after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday strengthened the Gunners’ title hopes.
Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick To Football podcast, the former Manchester United defender claimed Arsenal’s full-backs are superior to Liverpool’s options in every position.
Arsenal Pulls Ahead as Liverpool Falters
Liverpool, who once led Arsenal by five points, have now fallen four points behind after suffering consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United before losing 3-2 to Brentford.
Neville said, “When I was watching Arsenal vs Atletico, I was watching [Myles] Lewis-Skelly. Obviously Jurrien Timber played, you’ve got Ben White and [Riccardo] Calafiori. I thought all Arsenal’s full-backs are better than Liverpool’s, all four of them — that’s a big problem for Liverpool. Timber is the best full-back in the league at the moment.”
Praise for Arsenal’s Defensive Depth
Neville compared Timber to Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal, saying, “I think Timber is almost, in my mind, I would class as being…do you know the guy that plays for Real Madrid? [Dani] Carvajal. For me, he’s the best. And I think Timber’s the nearest to him at the moment.”
The comments came as Arsenal extended their lead with another victory while Liverpool suffered a setback at Brentford.
Despite efforts from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah, goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago secured a 3-2 win for Brentford.
Neville’s analysis appears to have been validated, as Arsenal continue to outpace their Premier League rivals both in form and squad strength.
