Union leaders have confirmed that over 300 bus drivers from the Bow garage will stage a four-day strike from Thursday, March 19 through Sunday, March 22, citing safety risks linked to driver fatigue and insufficient rest periods.
The strike will impact seven key routes in East London, including the 8, 25, 205, 425, and night buses such as N8, N25, and N205, disrupting services between Ilford, Tottenham Court Road, Bow Church, and other central locations.
Safety And Working Conditions At The Center
Unite union has stated that drivers are being compelled to cover excessive distances without adequate breaks, sometimes being required to start shifts only ten hours after completing the previous shift, raising significant safety concerns.
Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, said: “Fatigue is not just everyday tiredness, it is highly dangerous for both drivers and the general public. Unite will always ensure that our members receive good conditions.”
Impact On Passengers And Public Response
Regional officer John Murphy emphasized that passengers should be aware of the upcoming industrial action, attributing the dispute entirely to Stagecoach’s refusal to negotiate a meaningful resolution to the issues raised by drivers.
Murphy warned that the company’s ongoing neglect of driver welfare directly jeopardizes public safety and that a resolution is possible only if Stagecoach returns to serious discussions to address the fatigue and scheduling concerns.
Full List Of Affected Routes
The planned strike will affect the following bus services: 8 – Bow Church to Tottenham Court Road, N8 – Chigwell to Oxford Circus, 25 – Ilford to Holborn, N25 – Ilford to Holborn, 425 – Ilford to Clapton, 205 – Bow Church to Marble Arch, and N205 – Leyton to Paddington, including return journeys.
Union representatives maintain that industrial action remains preventable if the employer engages in meaningful negotiations to ensure that drivers receive sufficient rest periods and improved working conditions, prioritizing safety for both employees and passengers.
