Barcelona Switch Attention To Anthony Gordon As Arsenal’s Julian Alvarez Pursuit Gets Transfer Boost

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Julian Alvarez have received a significant boost after Barcelona turned their attention towards a different transfer target.

Barcelona have offered Newcastle United around £70million for Anthony Gordon as they look to beat Bayern Munich to his signature.

It is reported that Barcelona and Newcastle are engaged in advanced talks after the La Liga club formally registered their interest in the England international.

Bundesliga champions Bayern had already thrown their hat into the ring in their attempt to lure the 25-year-old to Germany.

However, Gordon now appears set to move to the Spotify Camp Nou, with terms between the player and club having already been agreed.

That development could prove to be a significant boost for Arsenal, who continue to be linked with a move for Alvarez.

The forward is expected to leave Atletico Madrid this summer and Arsenal are considered one of the frontrunners to secure his signature.

Barcelona had also been mentioned as a possible destination for Alvarez, but according to talkSPORT, they moved towards Gordon due to the fee involved in any deal for the Argentine.

Alvarez has scored 49 goals across two seasons at Atletico Madrid but is now said to be ready for a fresh challenge.

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson urged his old club to act decisively in the transfer market when speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast.

“I would get a centre forward this summer, I would go for Julian Alvarez,” Merson said.

“I’m a big fan. If they could get him I would. I still think they probably need another midfield player as well.”

Arsenal have reached the UEFA Champions League final, where they are set to face Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
