The San Antonio Spurs are on the brink of elimination from the Western Conference Finals heading into a crucial Game 6 on Thursday night.
To force a do-or-die Game 7 in Oklahoma City, the Spurs will likely need a significantly better performance from franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama scored 20 points in Game 5, but shot just 26.7 percent from the field and missed all five of his three-point attempts.
The Thunder have kept him quiet on the glass, holding him to a combined 20 rebounds in Games 3 through 5 after he hauled in 24 and 17 in the opening two contests.
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson demanded more from his best player following the defeat, making his expectations clear in his post-game remarks.
“[Victor’s] got to take more than 15 shots,” Johnson said after Wembanyama’s 4-for-15 performance from the field.
“Even with the 12 free throws, he’s going to need to score more than 20 points for sure. Oklahoma City did a good job.”
Fellow Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle provided a bright spot with an efficient 24 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Spurs.
Despite Castle’s efforts, the Thunder pulled out a 127-114 victory to move within one win of their second-consecutive NBA Finals appearance.
Wembanyama has already proven he can dominate when at his best, scoring 41 points in Game 1 of this series and joining the list of active players to reach the 50-point milestone against the Wizards during the regular season.
James Harden leads all active players with 25 games scoring 50 or more points, while Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard have each achieved the feat 15 times in their careers.
LeBron James has reached 50 points on 14 occasions, with Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo each recording nine such games during their respective careers.
Cooper Flagg is among the newest additions to the list, joining Wembanyama, Austin Reaves, Bam Adebayo, Kawhi Leonard, Aaron Gordon, and Lauri Markkanen as players to achieve the milestone most recently in the 2025-26 season.
