Gabriel Martinelli’s future at Arsenal has become a serious talking point this summer, with uncertainty surrounding his long-term place in Mikel Arteta’s attacking plans.
AS Roma have entered the picture by holding initial discussions with Martinelli’s representatives, according to the Mirror, as they explore whether a deal for the Brazilian winger is achievable.
The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract at Arsenal, although the club retain an option to extend that arrangement by a further season.
Arsenal have already moved to reshape their attacking options by adding Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, which has intensified questions over Martinelli’s position within the squad.
Galatasaray have also made an enquiry after turning their attention away from AC Milan star Rafael Leão, meaning Arsenal could face multiple approaches before the transfer deadline.
Despite the growing interest, an exit remains far from certain, as Arsenal are reportedly reluctant to let Martinelli leave unless they can first secure another high-level winger as a replacement.
Roma could also face difficulties in matching Martinelli’s current salary, which adds another layer of complexity to any potential deal between the two clubs.
Bradley Barcola is among the prominent names linked with a move to Arsenal, and the Gunners’ pursuit of another winger could ultimately determine whether Martinelli becomes available this summer.
Martinelli scored just one Premier League goal last season, and with competition for places increasing, he may no longer be guaranteed the prominent role he once held at the club.
His overall Arsenal record still stands as impressive, however, with 62 goals in 278 appearances across all competitions since joining from Ituano.
Selling this summer could allow Arsenal to maximise his transfer value rather than allowing his contractual situation to become more complicated heading into next summer.
