Cleveland Cavaliers Retain Head Coach Kenny Atkinson Despite Playoff Sweep Exit

The Cleveland Cavaliers have moved quickly to resolve uncertainty around their coaching setup following a painful postseason exit at the hands of the New York Knicks.

The team plans to retain head coach Kenny Atkinson along with his entire coaching staff, according to a report from Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

The decision was made less than 24 hours after Cleveland’s season-ending 130-93 loss to the Knicks, which completed a sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Atkinson’s retention is expected to prove controversial, given the level of criticism directed at him during the series against New York.

He drew widespread condemnation for holding onto his timeouts during a stunning collapse in Game 1, when the Cavaliers blew a 22-point fourth-quarter lead.

Atkinson also attracted ridicule for claiming his team was winning the series analytically, even as they stood on the verge of being swept out of the playoffs.

The manner in which the Cavaliers performed in Game 4, with many observers feeling the team quit, only added further questions about his handling of the roster.

In the regular season, Atkinson has posted a record of 116 wins and 48 losses since joining Cleveland, and he claimed Coach of the Year honours in 2025.

However, his playoff record stands at just 13 wins and 14 losses, raising ongoing doubts about his ability to lead the team deep into the postseason.

The Cavaliers are set to face significant roster decisions in the coming weeks, though their commitment to Atkinson appears to represent one major decision already made.

Reaching the Eastern Conference Finals was considered a step forward for the franchise, but their performance once they arrived there left many supporters and analysts frustrated.

With Atkinson now confirmed in his role, the expectation will be that Cleveland pushes further in next year’s playoffs, or faces the prospect of a fourth season not being guaranteed.
