Angus Gunn Signs Long-Term San Jose Earthquakes Deal After Nottingham Forest Exit

Scotland international goalkeeper Angus Gunn has completed a move to San Jose Earthquakes following his release from Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at the MLS club until the end of the 2030 season.

Gunn arrives with significant experience, having earned 25 caps for Scotland and recently featured at the World Cup held in the United States.

The goalkeeper played all three of Scotland’s group stage matches at the tournament, starting with a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Haiti.

Scotland then suffered back-to-back defeats, losing 1-0 to Morocco before a heavy 3-0 loss to Brazil ended their World Cup campaign.

San Jose currently sit second in the Western Conference after 15 games, level on goal difference with Vancouver Whitecaps but having played one additional match.

Bruce Arena’s side also occupy third place in the overall MLS standings, putting them in a strong position heading into the second half of the season.

Gunn expressed his excitement at the move and spoke of his ambitions to push for silverware with his new club in the months ahead.

“It feels incredible to join the Earthquakes,” Gunn told the club website. “Coming off the World Cup, which was an unbelievable experience, I’m just really excited and grateful for the opportunity to come to San Jose and show the best version of myself.”

“We’re in a really good position for the play-offs, so hopefully we can focus on that with the right mentality,” he added.

Head coach Bruce Arena welcomed the signing and highlighted what Gunn brings to the squad heading into a crucial period of the campaign.

“We’re looking forward to integrating him into the club for the second half of the season,” Arena said, describing the Scot as “a quality goalkeeper” with Premier League and World Cup experience.

Gunn will face competition for the starting shirt from 32-year-old Brazilian Daniel and 34-year-old American Earl William Edwards Jr.

The goalkeeper began his professional career at Manchester City before going on to represent Southampton, Stoke City, and two separate spells at Norwich City.

He joined Nottingham Forest in August but managed only a single substitute appearance for the Premier League club before his departure.

San Jose return to MLS action on Wednesday, 22 July when they host Orlando City, a fixture that could see Gunn make his debut for his new side.
