Liverpool’s pre-season preparations have been dealt an early setback after defender Joe Gomez was forced off injured within the opening minutes against Sunderland.
The experienced centre-back had to be withdrawn from the friendly after just seven to ten minutes, leaving supporters and staff concerned about his fitness heading into the new campaign.
Gomez was replaced by Ndukwe, with Kostas Tsimikas subsequently taking over the captain’s armband for the remainder of the match.
Dominic King from The Telegraph wrote on X: “The worst start to pre-season possible for Joe Gomez. He’s been substituted after 7 minutes with an injury. It doesn’t look serious, and no precautions will be taken, but still, it’s a real shame. Kostas Tsimikas is now captain.”
Despite the encouraging early assessment that the injury does not appear serious, the timing is still a frustrating blow for a player who has long battled availability issues at Anfield.
Gomez has been a highly valuable player for Liverpool over the years, but persistent injury problems have plagued his time at the club since he arrived from Charlton Athletic.
When fully fit, Gomez is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, combining his defensive quality with impressive composure on the ball.
The difficulty has always been that Liverpool have never quite managed to extract the very best from him on a consistent basis due to those recurring fitness setbacks.
The latest incident will only add further scrutiny to his availability record, coming at a point when he has already been heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer.
Whether Liverpool are prepared to sanction a departure remains to be seen, but the club’s reliance on him for the upcoming season looks increasingly uncertain in light of this latest development.
Ibrahima Konate has also been replaced during the pre-season period by Jeremy Jacquet, which highlights just how stretched Liverpool’s defensive resources are beginning to look.
The situation strengthens the argument that Liverpool need to invest in a versatile defender capable of providing cover both in central defence and at full-back throughout the campaign.
Today’s substitution may well prove to be nothing more than a precautionary measure, but it nonetheless reinforces the broader challenge Gomez faces in establishing himself as a dependable first-team fixture.
