Alejandro Garnacho has departed Chelsea to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal that is set to become permanent at the end of the campaign.
The 22-year-old winger only joined Chelsea last summer, with the Blues paying Manchester United £40million to secure his signature.
Despite that significant outlay less than a year ago, Garnacho was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and has now moved on.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery personally requested the Argentina international after losing Morgan Rogers to Chelsea in the same window.
The deal includes an obligation-to-buy clause worth £42.5million, which will trigger at the end of the season upon the fulfilment of certain conditions.
Although the specific conditions required to activate the clause have not been officially disclosed, they are understood to be easily achievable.
Once the permanent transfer is completed, Garnacho will sign a four-year contract with Emery’s Aston Villa side, tying him to the club through 2030.
The winger will wear the number 17 shirt at Villa Park, the same number he wore towards the end of his spell at Old Trafford with Manchester United.
Emery made no secret of his excitement at landing one of European football’s most coveted young attackers this summer.
Speaking to club media, Emery said: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young, and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
The move represents a significant statement of intent from Aston Villa as they continue to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level under Emery.
For Chelsea, the deal allows them to recoup close to their original investment while clearing space in a squad that has been reshaped extensively during this transfer window.
