Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Cristian Romero has signed a new long-term contract with the club, securing his future in north London.
The deal comes less than a week after Romero was officially named as Son Heung-min’s successor as Tottenham captain, a significant honour at the club.
Sources have told ESPN that Romero’s new contract is set to run until the end of the 2028-29 season, representing a four-year commitment from the defender.
The announcement came just hours after it was confirmed that Djed Spence had also agreed fresh terms with the north London club, a productive day for Spurs.
Son Heung-min’s departure to MLS club Los Angeles FC opened the door for Romero to inherit the armband ahead of the new Premier League season.
Atlético Madrid had been strongly linked with Romero, and sources told ESPN the Spanish club were confident they could prize him away at the start of the transfer window.
Despite those links to LaLiga, the 27-year-old Argentina international ultimately chose to remain at Spurs and commit his future to the club long term.
Romero had two years remaining on his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2027, meaning manager Thomas Frank moved quickly to extend his stay considerably.
The World Cup and two-time Copa América-winning centre-back wore the armband during Tottenham’s Europa League final triumph over Manchester United in May, with Son starting on the bench.
Romero was named Player of the Match in that Europa League final and later received the honour of being named the competition’s Player of the Season.
He also scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, though Spurs ultimately lost on penalties following a 2-2 draw after being pegged back late.
Romero then helped Tottenham to a strong Premier League opening, keeping a clean sheet as his side recorded a commanding 3-0 victory over Burnley.
The Argentine joined Spurs permanently in 2022 following a successful loan spell from Atalanta the previous season and has now made 126 appearances in all competitions.
Since his debut, no Tottenham player has made more clearances with 403, won more tackles with 172, or won more aerial duels with 303 than Romero across all competitions.
