Cristian Romero has broken his silence following his departure from Tottenham, delivering a heartfelt farewell message to the club and its supporters after five seasons in North London.
The Argentine defender left Spurs after Tottenham reached an agreement in principle with Atletico Madrid over a transfer worth around €40 million.
Romero took to social media to officially confirm his departure, sharing an emotional video montage documenting his journey at the club alongside a personal written tribute.
The World Cup winner reflected on how much Tottenham had come to mean to him and his family across those five years in North London.
In his message, Romero wrote: “Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives.”
The 28-year-old acknowledged that his time at Spurs was not without its difficulties, but made clear he wanted his farewell defined by the positive memories rather than any shortcomings.
He wrote: “I know I wasn’t perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.”
Romero also paid tribute to the Tottenham supporters directly, writing: “Thank you for loving me, respecting me and making me feel like one of you from day one.”
His message concluded with a deeply personal sign-off: “I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here. Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.”
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, initially arriving on loan before making his move permanent in the following transfer window.
Over his five seasons at the club, he established himself as one of the most important defensive figures in Spurs’ squad and eventually took on the captain’s armband.
His most significant contribution came during Tottenham’s Europa League-winning campaign, which finally ended the club’s long and painful trophy drought.
Romero played a central role throughout that run, combining aggressive defending with the physical intensity and uncompromising style that made him a firm fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
His passionate approach to the game occasionally led to disciplinary concerns, but his quality and commitment on the pitch were never seriously questioned by supporters or coaches.
Now set to play under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, Romero departs having fulfilled the ambition he outlined on his very first day in North London.
For Tottenham, his exit signals the end of a significant era in their defensive line, though the club have moved to address the gap with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.
