Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly pushing his club’s hierarchy to complete a deal for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo before the summer window closes.
Journalist Miguel Delaney, writing for The Independent, revealed that De Zerbi is “absolutely insistent” that Spurs pursue an official transfer for the Netherlands international.
Tottenham have already spent in excess of £300 million this summer under the Italian manager, making it one of the most aggressive transfer windows in the club’s history.
Despite that enormous outlay, De Zerbi appears unwilling to draw a line under his summer recruitment plans until Gakpo is secured.
The Spurs manager reportedly views the 27-year-old as a crucial final addition needed to complete his attacking setup at the north London club.
Tottenham have already moved decisively in the attacking department, bringing in Brazilian winger Savinho to provide a threat from the right flank.
Spurs have also agreed a deal to sign Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, giving De Zerbi a versatile option capable of operating centrally and across the forward line.
Yet De Zerbi reportedly sees Gakpo as the final piece of the puzzle, offering a powerful left-sided presence with his direct dribbling, physicality and press resistance.
Gakpo has recorded 51 goals and 23 assists across 181 appearances for Liverpool, underlining the quality De Zerbi is so keen to bring to Spurs.
Tottenham have reportedly already reached an agreement with Gakpo over personal terms, meaning negotiations with Liverpool represent the main obstacle remaining in this deal.
Liverpool’s stance on selling Gakpo could shift following their reported agreement to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a deal worth more than £100 million.
Barcola’s impending arrival would significantly increase Liverpool’s options on the left side of the attack and may create a positional surplus within Arne Slot’s squad.
That situation could encourage Liverpool to sanction Gakpo’s departure, particularly if the club are looking to offset some of the cost of signing Barcola.
For Tottenham, the emerging circumstances at Anfield could represent the window of opportunity needed to finally land De Zerbi’s top remaining target this summer.
