Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick has shed light on the club’s transfer strategy, insisting the Premier League champions conduct business in a principled and sensible manner.
His comments come at the end of a significant summer window that saw Mikel Arteta’s squad undergo considerable reshaping through arrivals and departures at the highest level.
Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis were among the most notable additions to Arsenal’s squad during the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, senior attackers Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli were among the prominent departures that reshaped Arteta’s attacking options considerably.
Speaking to the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, Garlick outlined the mindset Arsenal bring into transfer negotiations with clubs, agents and players.
He said: “Well, I think you need to go in with a clear idea of what you want to achieve and you need to keep your eyes on the prize, but you need to do it in a principled way and try and stick to the principles that you have as a club and we would have as a football leadership team.”
Garlick also addressed the reality of negotiations, explaining that genuine compromise often means no single party walks away completely satisfied with the outcome.
He added: “We try and do things sensibly but you want to get the job done. Usually people say in a good negotiation everyone comes out slightly unhappy because that’s the place where they want to be.”
The Arsenal CEO made clear that the ultimate goal is always to ensure the incoming player feels valued, regardless of friction elsewhere in the process.
Garlick said: “Maybe it’s their agent that’s not so happy or maybe it’s us that’s not so happy with the agent. But in the end we want a happy player.”
Arsenal’s business this summer came during what was described as a record-breaking Premier League spending window across the top flight as a whole.
The Premier League’s official transfer review highlighted Guimaraes, Konsa and Tzolis among Arsenal’s key additions as the champions looked to strengthen for another title challenge.
Garlick’s comments help explain why Arsenal have become noticeably more measured and structured in how they approach the transfer market compared to previous windows.
The club demonstrated a clear willingness to invest heavily this summer while also resisting the temptation to panic-buy late in the window under deadline day pressure.
That discipline will sometimes frustrate supporters when high-profile targets slip away, but it reflects a coherent recruitment philosophy built around long-term fit over short-term fixes.
Arsenal did ultimately resist adding another attacker late in the window when the right opportunity failed to present itself on acceptable terms to the club.
Garlick’s overall message to supporters and observers is straightforward: Arsenal are prepared to be aggressive in the market, but never reckless with the club’s resources.
