San Jose Earthquakes claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night, securing back-to-back wins in the process.
Daniel Munie scored the decisive goal, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn produced four saves to keep the Dynamo at bay throughout.
The result snapped Houston’s three-game unbeaten streak, with the Dynamo now having lost just twice in their last 13 games overall.
Houston sit on 43 points in the Western Conference, tied with Dallas for second place and two points clear of San Jose and St. Louis.
First-place Vancouver lead the conference with 46 points, making every result in the standings increasingly significant as the season progresses.
San Jose arrived on the back of a 3-2 win at San Diego on Wednesday, a result that ended an eight-game winless run following the World Cup break.
Gunn, the 30-year-old Scotland international who signed with the Earthquakes on July 8, recorded his second MLS shutout in 10 career appearances, all starts.
Remarkably, both of Gunn’s MLS shutouts have come against the Dynamo, having also kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at Houston on August 29.
The only goal arrived when Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond failed to claim a corner, with Niko Tsakiris playing the ball to Beau Leroux, who crossed low across the face of goal.
Munie reacted quickest to poke in a first-time finish from five yards out, beating Bond and several defenders to the ball in a crowded penalty area.
The goal was particularly significant for Munie, who had registered just five goal contributions across his first three MLS campaigns combined, all spent at San Jose.
This season has represented a major breakthrough for the midfielder, who now has five goals and four assists, already matching that previous career total in contributions.
The Earthquakes were made to work hard for the three points, with a frantic 60th-minute goalmouth scramble testing Gunn’s reflexes to the absolute limit.
The Scottish stopper saved Felipe Andrade’s effort at one post before making an extraordinary stop with his head to deny Lucas Halter at the other.
Despite dominating possession with 60% of the ball and outperforming San Jose 5-1 in shots on target, the Dynamo were ultimately unable to convert their chances and left empty-handed.
