Arsenal 2 (Giroud 77′, Ozil 90′) – Bayern 0
Match Report – Match Highlights – Post-Match Press Conference (via Arsenal.com)
The pressure building up to the Bayern game was very intense, bearing in mind that the club had lost its first two games in the group. Bayern came into the game in bullish mode, winning every game they’ve played this season and in Robert Lewandowski, they had a striker in the hottest of streaks. It was one of those nights when things would go according to plan for Arsene Wenger and his players but they were coming up against a really strong Bayern side. The German side had the lion share of possession and passes but Arsenal dealt with the threat the team posed.
Petr Cech was also instrumental in the game, making a plethora of saves, while Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were superb at the heart of the defense. Special mentions must go to the fullbacks, Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin. While they were awesome in defense, their contributions to Arsenal’s attack were immense as Monreal was denied an assist when his inch-perfect cross to Walcott was saved by Manuel Neuer and the German goalie was on hand to make another superb save from a Mesut Ozil shot but the Gunners had the official on the line to thank as he confirmed that it was a goal.
Seeing Olivier Giroud score two goals in his last two matches showed the benefits of the healthy competition between him and Theo Walcott. With the Frenchman hitting a good run of goalscoring form, will the manager reward him with a starting place against Everton on Saturday? Then there’s Mesut Ozil, that has been on a rich vein of form in recent weeks. The German has come under some criticism in his time at the club and it’s good to see him playing at the top of his game.
Arsenal’s win against Bayern has ignited the flames on their European campaign and they still have it all to do in their remaining fixtures. With Olympiakos edging out Dinamo Zagreb with a narrow win, the Gunners would need to get a positive result against Bayern at the Allianz Arena as well as getting maximum points against Dinamo at home and Olympiakos in Athens. It’s one step at a time for the Gunners in the Champion League.
