Liverpool Preview: The Games You Ought to Win

Liverpool vs Arsenal highlights - Top at Christmas as Gabriel and Salah score in Anfield draw - football.london

The last time Liverpool and Arsenal clashed in the Premier League, both sides harbored ambitions of staying at the top of the Premier League table, and the stalemate was enough to keep the Gunners in pole position. A couple of games have passed by since then, Liverpool gaffer, Jurgen Klopp, announced his imminent resignation, and the tides have turned at the top, with Liverpool sitting pretty with five points clear off Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Arsenal’s record against Liverpool in the Premier League has been atrocious, as the Gunners only won two of their last 17 league games against Liverpool, with both coming at the Emirates in July 2020 and October 2022. Arsenal also hasn’t kept a clean sheet against Liverpool in any of the previous 16 encounters, conceding 44 goals. Arsenal will also have to be mindful of Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, that has averaged a goal or assist every 41 minutes in his five appearances at the Emirates Stadium for Liverpool, scoring five goals and supplying two assists.

To team news, Arsenal will be without long-term absentees, Jurrien Timber and Fabio Vieira, while Mohamed Elneny and Takehiro Tomiyasu will be returning from their international football sojourns. Thomas Partey was expected to be available for selection, but according to Mikel Arteta, the Ghanaian lynchpin has suffered a setback on his muscular injury, and remains out for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool on the other hand, has a plethora of injuries, with Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip, Kostas Tsimikas and their most influential player, Mohamed Salah out of contention. Like Tomiyasu, Wataru Endo has returned from international duty with Japan after their elimination in the hands of Iran. On the bright side, their full backs, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, have returned to full fitness, following their recent spate with injuries.
