Tomiyasu, His New Deal and Arsenal Future

Takehiro Tomiyasu has signed a contract extension with Arsenal, continuing the trend of players that have extended their stay with the club, as Mikel Arteta and Edu are doing their own bit to keep the tight-knit bunch together.

Tomiyasu joined Arsenal as a relatively unknown player from Bologna and his versatility has been one of his most distinct features with the club, with him featuring as a left back and center back adeptly, despite primarily deployed as a right back. However, his time at Arsenal has been marred by injuries and this season hasn’t been any different.

In his first season with the club, he enjoyed a good consistent run of form as the #1 right back but he suffered a calf injury that sidelined him for two months, which saw him miss 11 games. Things were worse last season, with the right back suffering fan unfortunate knee injury in the knockout clash with Sporting CP in February 2023, ultimately ending his season prematurely. This campaign, he suffered a recurrence of calf injury, which has seen him miss close to 14 games and he wasn’t fully fit when he departed to play for Japan in the Asian Cup.

Tomiyasu is 25 and has his best years ahead of him, but in Ben White, Arsenal has a player that has been an epitome of consistency, but the Japanese full back will remain as a good squad player that would do the business when deployed on the pitch.

This new contract keeps at the club to 2026 with an option of an additional year, but it’s good to see the club showing great commitment to another of its hardest working playing staff.

With Arsenal competing on two fronts, Arteta will need all hands on deck and will be hoping to get the best out of Tomiyasu, as Arteta will need all hands on deck to support in the title and European campaign.
