Arsenal star William Saliba has admitted that he needs to win trophies to be termed the best defender in the world even if he believes that he is one of the best in the business at the moment.
Saliba has emerged as one of the top centre-backs in the last two years and was pivotal in helping Arsenal have the meanest defence in the Premier League last season.
The Frenchman is again expected to play a major role this term if Arsenal are yet to take the next step in their evolution and start winning major trophies again.
Arsenal gave Manchester City a run for their money in the Premier League title race in the last two years with Saliba in the team but they fell short in both seasons.
The defender feels that his career is on the right track and he believes that he is one of the best centre-backs in the world at the moment.
William Saliba conceded that he needs to win trophies to back his claim
The French defender indicated that it is of no use what he thinks about his ability if there are no trophies beside his name.
Saliba conceded that he needs to start winning major trophies and adding silverware to his accolades if he is to be considered the best defender in the world.
He insisted that he believes that he is one of the best but admitted that for others to recognise that he needs silverware beside his name.
“I have been on the right track for the past two seasons, especially last season”, Saliba said on Fox Sports Mexico.
“I am perhaps on my way to becoming the best defender in the world. I think I am one of the best at the moment, but to say that I have to win some titles. I think that is what I am missing right now.
“If you win titles you are good and if you don’t, you can’t say you are the best.
“That’s what I believe. I am one of the best in the world.”
Real Madrid are interested in Saliba but are aware that it would be hard to snare him away from Arsenal next year if the club continue to progress.
